Native Species Butterfly House

Adirondack Park Agency Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC) staff at Paul Smiths closed the Native Species Butterfly House for the season on Monday, Sept. 3, 2007.

The Butterfly House will re-open for its 16th annual season on Thursday, June 12, 2008.

Butterflies are beautiful, but they are by no means the only residents in this house. Butterflies such as the eastern tiger swallowtails live among other species such as luna and cecropia moths. The 30-by-55-foot structure duplicates the natural environment of the region. It contains roadside wild flowers such as milkweed, garden-variety flowers, host plants and trees that are used by butterflies and moths.

In early June every year, volunteers and staff plant new flowers and erect the black mesh netting on the aluminum Butterfly House frame. They also set some butterflies and moths free inside the structure before the opening.

The Butterfly House features butterflies and moths in all stages of development. Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day from mid-June until Labor Day, naturalists are on hand to answer questions from the public. It is operated by volunteers and VIC staff and funded by the Adirondack Park Institute, which is based in Newcomb.

The Native Species Butterfly House opened in 1993 and is dedicated to the memory of former Paul Smiths VIC volunteer services coordinator and Butterfly House founder Breck Chapin.
