Paul Smiths VIC Calendar - descriptions

The Paul Smiths VICs offers a wide variety of free and low-cost public programs throughout the year. Participants, young and old, learn about all assets of the unique Adirondack Park with hands-on activities both inside and outside the buildings. Many programs are designed so people can enjoy the natural wonders of the mountains, flora and fauna found along the scenic VIC trails.

May 2008

May 1: Exploring Nature with Little People. 10 a.m. - noon. This is a unique program with a hands-on approach that introduces young children to the natural environment. Held every other Thursday until June for preschoolers ages 3-5 years. Preregistration is required. Cost: $4/child ($2/child for Adirondack Park Institute members).

May 3: Signs of Spring Walk. 10-11:30 a.m. Join a naturalist on this walk as we explore the awaking woods in search for signs of spring. Preregistration is required. Free.

May 9: Flight of the Timberdoodle. 7-8:30 p.m. Observe the unusual courtship flight of the American Woodcock. This program will start at the VIC and then caravan to the courtship site. Preregistration is required. Free.

May 11: Woodland Wildflowers on Mother’s Day. 1-2:30 p.m. Join Naturalist Peter O’Shea for a walk as the woodland wildflowers once again beginning their yearly show. Admire this show and learn some of the folklore that surrounds these flowers. Preregistration is required. Free.

May 14: WOW!  The Wonders of Wetlands. 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. This one day workshop introduces participants to wetland ecology through a study of three parameters(vegetation, soils, hydrology) as well as wetland functions and values utilizing hands-on, inquiry-based, cross-curricular activities from the most used wetland education source in the world. Preregistration is required. The cost for the course is $45/ participant.

May 18: Barnum Pond Canoe Paddle. 1-3 p.m. Join this naturalist led canoe paddle on Barnum Pond.  Bog and pond habitats will be interpreted by canoe. Canoes, paddles and PFD will be provided. There is a short walk required to the canoe dock. Preregistration is required.  $3 adults/ $1 kids (Adirondack Park Institute members are free).

May 25: Sunday Movie Matinee: “Hooked on Hummingbirds.” 1-2 p.m. This is a documentary of 20 species of hummingbirds that reside from the United States to Costa Rica.  Enjoy close-up footage in slow motion as well as nest building, feeding their chicks and aerobatics. The video will be shown in the theater and popcorn will be available. Preregistration is not required. Binoculars are optional. Donations of $2/adult and $1/ child suggested.

May 26: Perennial Plant Swap. 1-2 p.m. Bring your extra perennial plants to the VIC and receive points for each plant. A point value of between 1 and 3 will be given according to the plant’s occurrence. Then use the points to trade for other plants. Please drop off your plants before 12:45 p.m. Leftover plants will be sold to benefit the Butterfly House. Drop in.  Free.

May 31: Wood Warbler Workshop. 8:30-11:30 a.m. Join local bird expert Brian McAllister as he helps to identify woodland warblers by both sight and sound. Preregistration is required. Free.

June 2008

June 1: Sunday Movie Matinee: “Watching Warblers.” 1-2 p.m. This movie explores the lives of the 39 warbler species that nest in Eastern North America. Footage of feeding and fledging is shown and hear their beautiful songs. The video will be shown in the theater and popcorn will be available. Preregistration is not required. Binoculars are optional. Donations of $2/adult and $1/ child suggested.

June 4: Wilderness Canoe Paddle: Follensby Pond Loop. 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. MAC’s Canoe Livery will be guiding this trip for the Adirondack Park Agency Visitor Interpretive Center. MAC’s will be providing the congenial, knowledgeable guide, canoes, PFDs and some trip transport for this paddle. Trips will begin and end at MAC’s base on Route 30 in Lake Clear. Participants should bring their lunch, clothes and gear appropriate for the weather. Cost is $60 per person (children 10 and under are $30 when accompanied by an adult). Adirondack Park Institute members receive a 15 percent discount. Reservations will be accepted on a space available basis until 5 p.m. on June 3. Call MAC’s at (518) 891-1176 to register. June 6-8: Sixth Annual Great Adirondack Birding Celebration. Birding trips, lectures, workshops, vendors, exhibits and the popular Teddy Roosevelt Birding Challenge. Some of the boreal species that birders will seek include the black-backed woodpecker, three-toed woodpecker, boreal chickadee, spruce grouse, Bicknell’s thrush and a variety of migrating warblers.

June 11: Wilderness Canoe Paddle: St. Regis Lakes Great Camps. 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. MAC’s Canoe Livery will be guiding this trip for the Adirondack Park Agency Visitor Interpretive Center. MAC’s will be providing the congenial, knowledgeable guide, canoes, PFDs and some trip transport for this paddle. Trips will begin and end at MAC’s base on Route 30 in Lake Clear. Participants should bring their lunch, clothes and gear appropriate for the weather. Cost is $60 per person (children 10 and under are $30 when accompanied by an adult). June 15: Father’s Day Marsh Sampling. 1-2:30 p.m. What better way to spend Father’s Day than with a dip net exploring for marsh life? Fathers can even bring the kids. Wear clothes that can get wet and muddy. Preregistration is required. Free.

June 20: Loons, Moons, and Nighttime Tunes Night Hike. 6:30-9 p.m. This is a walk around Black Pond to look for loons and listen to the nighttime sounds. We will stop at a lean-to for a snack so please bring a snack to share. Meet at the VIC. Preregistration is required. Free.

June 21: Early Summer Wildflowers. 10-11:30 a.m. Explore the woodlands and trails in a search for wildflowers that are transitioning from spring to summer. Preregistration is required. Free.

June 25: Wilderness Canoe Paddle: Seven Carries through St. Regis Canoe Area. 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. MAC’s Canoe Livery will be guiding this trip for the Adirondack Park Agency Visitor Interpretive Center.  MAC’s will be providing the congenial, knowledgeable guide, canoes, PFDs and some trip transport for this paddle. Trips will begin and end at MAC’s base on Route 30 in Lake Clear. Participants should bring their lunch, clothes and gear appropriate for the weather. June 28: Wetland Ecology. 10 a.m. - noon. Have you ever wondered what makes a wetland special? Dan Spada, Supervisor of the Adirondack Park Agency’s Resource Analysis and Scientific Services division, will be here to discuss the function of wetlands. Wetland components will be looked at and explained what each does. Preregistration is required. Free.

June 29: Search for Snakes. 1-3 p.m. Join a naturalist as we search the VIC’s trails for snakes. We will learn what snakes live here and why they like the trail system. Preregistration is required. Free.

July 2008

Daily: Live Bird-of-Prey Program. Noon. Featuring a live red-tailed hawk. Join a staff naturalist for an informative talk on the habits and adaptations of this native Adirondack raptor. A question-and-answer session follows each presentation. Drop in. Free.

Daily: Butterfly House. 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Walk among butterflies and moths in an enclosed outdoor habitat. Naturalists are inside to answer questions. Drop in. Free.

Daily: Naturalist on Station. 9:30-11:30 a.m. (weather permitting). VIC naturalists answer your questions and point out wildlife with the use of spotting scopes from points beside the VIC’s Heron Marsh. Stop at the front desk to find out if there is a naturalist on station and where to go. Drop in. Free.

July 1: Barnum Pond Canoe Paddles. 9:30-11:30 a.m. These are naturalist-led canoe paddles on Barnum Pond. Bog and pond habitats will be interpreted by canoe. Canoes, paddles and PFDs will be provided. There is a short walk required to the canoe dock. Preregistration is required. Cost: $3 adults/$1 kids (Adirondack Park Institute members are free).

July 2: Wilderness Canoe Paddle: Lake Lila with possible hike up Mount Frederica. 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Adirondack Park Agency Visitor Interpretive Center at Paul Smiths. MAC’s Canoe Livery will be guiding this trip for the Adirondack Park Agency Visitor Interpretive Center. MAC’s will be providing the congenial, knowledgeable guide, canoes, PFDs and some trip transport for this paddle. Trips will begin and end at MAC’s base on Route 30 in Lake Clear. July 4: Family Cookout. 7-8:30 p.m. Celebrate summer with the family the American way.  We will be cooking hot dogs over a campfire at a lean-to on Heron Marsh. Enjoy dinner as you watch the sunset over the marsh.  Listen to sounds of evening creatures as they become active. Then you will still have time to get the whole family down to town to watch the fireworks. Preregistration is required. Cost: $2/adults, $1/children (Adirondack Park Institute members free).

July 5: Butterfly Crafts. 1-3 p.m. Be inspired by the beautiful butterflies and caterpillars in the Butterfly House and then come and craft your own winged wonder! This program is open to people of all ages and is being taught by local artist Maria DeAngelo. Drop in. Free.

July 8: Barnum Pond Canoe Paddles. 9:30-11:30 a.m. These are naturalist-led canoe paddles on Barnum Pond. Bog and pond habitats will be interpreted by canoe. July 9: Adirondack Almanac Lecture Series. 7:30 p.m. “Global Warming and invasive Fish Species,” by Mark Malchoff. Free.

July 12: Plants and Orchids of the Bog. 1-3 p.m. Daun Dahlen of Paul Smith’s College will led this walk on the Boreal Life Trail to discover what grows in the bog. Preregistration is required. $2/adult (Adirondack Park Institute members free).

July 23: Adirondack Almanac Lecture Series. 7:30 p.m. “The Oral History of Adirondack Communities: Saving the Past for the Future,” by Caperton Tissot. Free.

July 24: Barnum Pond Canoe Paddles. 9:30-11:30 a.m. These are naturalist-led canoe paddles on Barnum Pond. Bog and pond habitats will be interpreted by canoe. Canoes, paddles and PFDs will be provided. There is a short walk required to the canoe dock. Preregistration is required. Cost: $3 adults/$1 kids (Adirondack Park Institute members are free).

July 26: Summer Wagon Ride. 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Paul Smith’s College Draft Horse Club will have their draft horses hitched up to offer wagon rides to view the summer woods. Call the VIC to schedule a time and where to meet. Reservations will be taken after June 15 by calling the Paul Smiths VIC at (518) 327-3000. Preregistration is requested. Cost: $5/adult $2/child ($3 for Adirondack Park Institute members). Proceeds will go to the Draft Horse Program.

Aug. 13: Adirondack Almanac Lecture Series. 7:30 p.m. “Brook Trout and Round Fish Restoration in the Adirondacks,” by Bill Schoch. Free.

Aug. 14: Barnum Pond Canoe Paddles. 9:30-11:30 a.m. These are naturalist-led canoe paddles on Barnum Pond. Bog and pond habitats will be interpreted by canoe. Canoes, paddles and PFDs will be provided. There is a short walk required to the canoe dock. Preregistration is required. Cost: $3 adults/$1 kids (Adirondack Park Institute members are free).

Aug. 16: Evening Canoe Paddle. 6-8 p.m. The canoes will be launched for an evening paddle on Barnum Pond. Canoes, paddles and PFDs are provided. Space is limited so please call ahead to make reservations. Cost: $3/adults, $1/children (Adirondack Park Institute members are free).

Aug. 20: Wilderness Canoe Paddle: Raquette River to the Falls. 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. MAC’s Canoe Livery will be guiding this trip for the Adirondack Park Agency Visitor Interpretive Center. MAC’s will be providing the congenial, knowledgeable guide, canoes, PFDs and some trip transport for this paddle. Trips will begin and end at MAC’s base on Route 30 in Lake Clear. Participants should bring their lunch, clothes and gear appropriate for the weather. Cost is $60 per person (children 10 and under are $30 when accompanied by an adult). Aug. 20: Family Hike . 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Families are encouraged to join these hikes on trails around the VIC. Bring a bag lunch or snacks for the trail. We will stop along our journey for a trail lunch. Please remember we are a Carry it in Carry it out facility. Preregistration is required. Free.

Aug. 24: Introduction to Ferns. 1:30-3 p.m. Come for a naturalist-led walk around the 2-mile Forest Ecology Trail as we focus on ferns. How many different ferns can we spot? We will identify a few of these and talk about some fern basics. Bring a fern field guide if you have one. Preregistration is required. Free.

Aug. 30: Mercury Migration Conservation through the Lives of Adirondack Loons. 1-2 p.m. Dr. Nina Schoch, a Conservation Scientist from the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Adirondack Loon Program, will be here to discuss loon natural history and provide updates on the latest mercury research. This is a drop-in program. Free.
