Paul Smiths VIC Calendar - descriptions

The Paul Smiths VICs offers a wide variety of free and low-cost public programs throughout the year. Participants, young and old, learn about all assets of the unique Adirondack Park with hands-on activities both inside and outside the buildings. Many programs are designed so people can enjoy the natural wonders of the mountains, flora and fauna found along the scenic VIC trails.

ART SHOW: “Damsels & Dragons … Flying Jewels of New York State.” June 1 - Aug. 1, 2009. This display of photographic portraits, by Vici and Steve Diehl, features damselflies (damsels) and dragonflies (dragons) along with images of the varied habitats in which they are found. Call the Paul Smiths VIC at (518) 327-3000.

July 1 - July 31 (Tuesday - Saturday): Live Bird of Prey Program. Noon. Join a staff naturalist for an informative talk on the habits and adaptations of a native Adirondack raptor. A question-and-answer session follows each presentation. Drop in. Free.

July 1 - July 31 (Tuesday - Saturday): Butterfly House. 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Experience native species of butterflies and moths up close. In the Butterfly House you can walk among these beautiful insects in an enclosed outdoor habitat. Naturalists are inside to answer questions. Drop in. Free.

July 1: Backcountry Canoe Paddle: Lake Lila with possible hike up Mount Frederica. 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. MAC’s Canoe Livery will be guiding this trip for the Adirondack Park Agency Visitor Interpretive Center. MAC’s will be providing the congenial, knowledgeable guide, canoes, PFDs and some trip transport for this paddle. Trips will begin and end at MAC’s base on Route 30 in Lake Clear. Participants should bring their lunch, clothes and gear appropriate for the weather. Cost is $60 per person (children 10 and under are $30 when accompanied by an adult). Adirondack Park Institute members receive a 15 percent discount. Reservations will be accepted on a space available basis until 5 p.m. on June 30. There is a two person minimum for all trips, and trips will go in the rain if you will. 

July 1: Adirondack Almanac Lecture Series. 7:30 p.m. “People and the Park,” by Mike Brennan. See how New York state has worked to preserve and protect the Adirondack Park. The program will look at exploration and settlement and then focus on the steps taken to assure the Park’s place as a model for conservation in the future. Free. Drop in. July 2: Barnum Pond Canoe Paddle. 9:30-11:30 a.m. These are naturalist-led canoe paddles on Barnum Pond. Bog and pond habitats will be interpreted by canoe. Canoes, paddles and PFDs will be provided. There is a short walk required to the canoe dock.  Preregistration is required. Cost; $3 adults/$1 kids (free for Adirondack Park Institute members are free). July 3: Wetland Ecology. 10 a.m. – noon. Have you ever wondered what makes a wetland special? Dan Spada, supervisor of the Adirondack Park Agency’s Resource Analysis and Scientific Services (RASS) Division, will be here to discuss the function of wetlands. July 4: Plants and Orchids of the Bog. 1-3 p.m. Daun Reuter of Paul Smith’s College will lead this walk on the Boreal Life Trail to discover what grows in the bog. Preregistration is required. Cost: $2/adult (free for Adirondack Park Institute members). Call the Paul Smiths VIC at (518) 327-3000.

MAC’s will be providing the congenial, knowledgeable guide, canoes, PFDs and some trip transport for this paddle. Trips will begin and end at MAC’s base on Route 30 in Lake Clear. Participants should bring their lunch, clothes and gear appropriate for the weather. Cost is $60 per person (children 10 and under are $30 when accompanied by an adult). July 9: Barnum Pond Canoe Paddle. 9:30-11:30 a.m. These are naturalist-led canoe paddles on Barnum Pond. Bog and pond habitats will be interpreted by canoe. Canoes, paddles and PFDs will be provided. July 11: API Friends Walk. 10 a.m. Remember, “Friends don’t let Friends stay inside!” Join the Adirondack Park Institute (API), the friends group of the VICs, for an informal walk on the Paul Smiths VIC trail system. Afterwards, enjoy a bit of knitting or crocheting; the API is helping Mountain Gift and Powder Co., of Saranac Lake, produce blankets for those in need. July 15: Adirondack Almanac Lecture Series. 7:30 p.m. “A Walk in the Adirondack Woods,” by Randy Lewis. See how this author’s excursions to the Paul Smiths VIC inspired her poetry and prose for “Actively Adirondack: Reflections on Mountain Life in the 21st Century,” which won the Adirondack Center for Writing's Best Book Award for 2007. July 16: Barnum Pond Canoe Paddle. 9:30-11:30 a.m. These are naturalist-led canoe paddles on Barnum Pond. Bog and pond habitats will be interpreted by canoe. July 18: Butterfly Crafts. 1-3 p.m. Be inspired by the beautiful butterflies and caterpillars in the Butterfly House and then come and craft your own winged wonder. This program is open to people of all ages and is being taught by local artist Maria DeAngelo. Drop in.  Free. Call the Paul Smiths VIC at (518) 327-3000.

July 21: Barnum Pond Canoe Paddle. 9:30-11:30 a.m. These are naturalist-led canoe paddles on Barnum Pond. Bog and pond habitats will be interpreted by canoe. July 22: Adirondack Almanac Lecture Series. 7:30 p.m. “Birding Triumphs and Tragedies,” by Brian McAllister. See what it takes to be the Adirondack Park’s foremost authority on birding, from a birder who is in the field with binoculars most of the year. McAllister was the founding organizer of the Great Adirondack Birding Festival, held the first weekend of June every year at the Paul Smiths VIC. Free. Drop in. July 25: Summer Wagon Ride. 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. The Paul Smith’s College Draft Horse Club will have its draft horses hitched up to offer wagon rides to view the summer woods. Call the VIC to schedule a time and where to meet. Reservations will be taken after June 15 by calling the Paul Smiths VIC at (518) 327-3000. Preregistration is requested. Cost: $5/adult, $2/child, $3/Adirondack Park Institute members. Money collected will go to the Draft Horse Program.

July 28: Barnum Pond Canoe Paddle. 9:30-11:30 a.m. These are naturalist-led canoe paddles on Barnum Pond. Bog and pond habitats will be interpreted by canoe. Aug. 15: Art Show Reception. 2-4 p.m. Meet artist Georgeanne Gaffney and see her show, “Meander,” landscape paintings from the VIC property throughout the seasons. Call the Paul Smiths VIC at (518) 327-3000.

Aug. 15: Dragonflies of Heron Marsh. 1-3 p.m. Join Dr. Janet Mihuc, associate professor of Biology at Paul Smith’s College, and VIC naturalist Lydia Wright for an afternoon of discovering the dragonflies and damselflies of Heron Marsh. Participants will be given an overview of dragonfly and damselfly (odonate) biology, as well as learn to properly capture (and release), handle, and identify these amazing insects. Bring a butterfly net and magnifying glass if you have them (we will have a few on hand for use if you don’t) and shoes that can get damp or wet. Preregistration is required. Aug. 29: Introduction to Ferns. 1:30-3:30 p.m. Come for a naturalist-led walk around the 2.0 mile Forest Ecology Trail as we focus on ferns. How many different ferns can we spot?
