In 2009, the Chilly Ski Festival and the Friends & Families Snowshoe Festival will morph into a brand new event at the Paul Smiths VIC: the Chilly Ski & Snowshoe Festival. It will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 17-18, 2009 as part of the VICs' Wild Winter Weekend.

The Newcomb VIC will have its own set of programs for this Agencywide festival. Check out the Newcomb VIC schedule.

The Chilly Ski & Snowshoe Festival will include ski workshops, children's activities, naturalist-led trips, the annual Wild Winter Chili Cooking Contest and the fourth annual Ben & Jerry's Invitational Ice Cream Eating Contest.

The full schedule will be posted in December.

cross-country skiing & snowshoeing

The Chilly Ski & Snowshoe Festival gives the VIC a perfect opportunity to show off its winter trail system, featuring 9.5 miles of combined cross-country ski/snowshoe trails.

In 2009, we will celebrate the fourth annual Ben & Jerry's Invitational Ice Cream Eating Contest at the Chilly Ski Festival. Snow and ice weren't cold enough, so we decided to eat ice cream and get the brain freeze on!

The contestants -- local media VIPs -- are invited to the VIC stage to see who can eat a pint of Ben & Jerry's ice cream the fastest. Former Lake Placid News Editor Ed Forbes took first place in 2006 and 2007, eating Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough in 1:53 and 2:11, respectively.

The ice cream and prizes are donated by Ben & Jerry's of Lake Placid.

The contest starts at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18 in the VIC theater.

children's activities

We have two popular activities for children: Snow Painting and making Snow Ice Cream (maple, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry). The activities are held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18. (Sunday only)
