Newcomb VIC

The New York State Adirondack Park Agency Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC) at Newcomb is located on State Route 28N in the Essex County town of Newcomb. The VIC opened on Monday, Oct. 15, 1990. The building and trail system are on 236 acres of the Huntington Wildlife Forest, a preserve owned by Syracuse University and maintained by the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. The state leases the land to operate this public facility.

The site includes a mile-long forested peninsula on Rich Lake, distinctive wetlands, old growth forest types, lake vistas, scenic overlooks, a classroom building, a 3.6-mile trail system, picnic tables, a 40-car parking lot, and a 6,000-square-foot public assembly building with a multi-purpose room, exhibit rooms, a visitor information desk, a lounge and rest rooms. Trails are used for snowshoeing in the winter.

Educational programs include on-site science and naturalist programs for adults and schoolchildren, summer activities, trail walks, bird-on-hand programs and lectures. Inside the building, watch the 17-minute slide show, "Unlocking the Wilderness," a presentation about settling the Adirondack Park (mining, logging, health resorts, etc.). In addition, the Newcomb VIC offers school outreach programs and sponsors hiking, canoeing, snowshoeing, skiing and birding trips to various locations around the region.

As a New York State Wildlife Viewing Site, visitors may catch a glimpse of the following species of wildlife on the VIC property: common loon, beaver, white-tailed deer, red fox, coyote, mink, pine marten, moose and many species of birds.

While the State of New York owns and operates the building, the Adirondack Park Institute, a not-for-profit friends groups based in Newcomb, funds curricula, environmental education programs, publications and special events at the VIC.
