Paul Smiths VIC - Snow Patrol

School Programs at the Paul Smiths VIC

Winter Program - Paul Smiths VIC

THERE IS A WHOLE WORLD OF ACTIVITY going on outdoors during the winter and most youngsters know nothing about it. Now third through sixth grade classes can head out on snowshoes to read the story of winter adaptations.
See where a snowshoe hare sat to hide, follow the tracks of a fox in search of supper, and discover which animals are active in winter and how they survive.

This free VIC program includes an introduction to winter animal signs and tracks, a session outdoors to explore the woods on snowshoes while searching for animal tracks, time for a lunch break, and an indoor session allowing students to walk various track patterns and cast plaster tracks.

WHO? This program is tailored for students in grades three through six. Staff will further refine activities with teachers who have specific learning objectives. We can accommodate 1-2 classes per day, for a maximum of 50 students.

WHAT? Staff naturalists and trained volunteers conduct the introduction, snowshoeing, and classroom learning activities. Teachers and chaperones are responsible for discipline during the VIC visit. Snowshoes are provided for the program and everyone should be dressed warmly. Without exception, students must wear boots, hats, and mittens or gloves in addition to a jacket. Everyone should bring a bag lunch.

WHERE? The entire program takes place on the trails and in the classroom at the Visitor Interpretive Center, Route 30, in Paul Smiths, NY.

WHEN? Field trips may be scheduled for weekdays during January and February. We ask groups to arrive at 9:30am and stay for 3 to 4 hours (including lunch time) in order to participate in the full program.

HOW? Call (518) 327-3000 for more information or to schedule your class visit. Registration begins the first Monday in November. This program is free of charge.
